  • Do your activities cover areas of the school curriculum?

Yes. If you would like information on the different areas, please do not hesitate to get in contact with us for further clarification. We also have the potential to offer training towards unit standards if the school is accredited to provide these.

  • Why should we come to PFOC rather than anywhere else?

PFOC's programmes offer specific learning outcomes delivered by highly qualified and experienced outdoor professionals. PFOC has excellent risk management practices with comprehensive Activity Managment forms for each activity which are regularly updated. We have been in operation for more than 15 years and are leaders in the field of outdoor and environmental education. PFOC is within easy driving distance of many major Canterbury cities and towns, maximizing the time you spend in the outdoors rather than traveling.

  • Do we have to do everything?

The more you do, the more you will get out of your time at PFOC. PFOC has a 'Challenge by Choice' philosophy. The Instructors are all very supportive and will work through any barriers students may have with a particular activity.

  • Can we choose our own groups?

That depends on what the school aims/guidelines are; sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. If PFOC sorts the groups, we tend to use a random selection process to mix people as much as possible.

  • Can we choose what we do?

There is a degree of flexibility in what you do. It is your adventure week and the instructor is there to facilitate and look after your safety. At the beginning of the week the instructor will outline some options and it will be up to your group to choose which of these you want to do. You will also have an obligation to help around the centre with things such as tree planting, eco-restoration or cleaning duties.

  • Can our students be assessed against Unit Standards?

Yes. This is done either under the schools accreditation or under Skills Active. Unit standards are available in kayaking, ABL, low/high ropes, rafting, rock climbing, tramping/camping, and river crossing. Contact PFOC for more details.

  • Do we have to use PFOC to run all the activities?

No, if there are activities that your staff is competent to run, such as bush walks or orienteering, you are free to use them. PFOC will not be responsible for any incidents or accidents that occur during activities your staff are running.

  • Can I see your safety plans?

Most certainly, please ask the PFOC Operations Manager who can provide you with our most current Activity Management plans and Safety Operating Procedures.
